Genus Pilumnus

Leach, 1815

Usually entire body set with hairs. Dorsal surface of the carapace moderately convex, with the regions more or less defined. Antero-lateral margins with sharp spines behind exorbital angles. Postero-lateral margins distinctly concave. Front bilobed, exceptionally entire; pre-orbital tooth distinct. Chelipeds unequal, hairy; outer surface of palm often with several rows of spines; fingers pointed. Thoracic sternum rather narrow. Male abdomen narrow and slender. G1 slender and recurved. G2 short, sigmoid. (Guinot 1998)

Type species: Cancer hirtellus Linnaeus, 1767, by monotypy.
