Familia Raninidae

Presence of spermathecae. Female openings coxal. Male openings coxal.
Named frog crabs. Specialized for burrowing behaviour and modified: elongated body; legs with flattened propodi and dactyli, modifications of the buccal parts, notably a triangular buccal frame. Proximal articles of the exopod and endopod of first maxilliped forming a respiratory channel. Third maxilliped completely covering the buccal cavity. Abdomen consisting of six segments plus the telson, narrow in both sexes, very short and incompletely folded. Male G1 short, either foliaceous and not completely closed, or tubular, completely closed. Male G2 either rather long and ending in a broad appendix masculina, or short and sigmoid or with an extremity very slightly styliform. (Guinot 1998)
