Carapace wide, broadened anteriorly. Dorsal surface either scabrous or terraced. Orbits directed forward. Front wide. Rostrum pointed, or trifid (fossil forms). Thoracic sternum very deflexed at the level of sternite 7, the sternite 8 perpendicular to the preceeding; sternite 4 wide; sternite 5 only lateral; sternite 6 linear, especially between the coxae of P3. Chelipeds with short flattened propodus; dactylus short, bent against the anterior border of palm; fixed finger very short. Spermathecal apertures close together, longitudinal in outline.
