Subfamilia Raninoidinae

Carapace with margins nearly parallel. Frontal region broadened. Front wide. Rostrum pointed, or trifid (fossil forms). Antennae with a very developed basal article, bearing a prominent scale. Merus of third maxilliped markedly shorter than ischium. Supraorbital border developed, with teeth and notches. Thoracic sternum with sternites 1-6 in the same plane; sternite 4 very large; sternite 6 separated from the sternite 5 by a transversal line, longitudinally grooved, anteriorly wide and posteriorly linear. Spermathecal apertures close together, longitudinal in outline. (Guinot 1998)
