Genus Aethra

Latreille, 1816

Carapace very broad, transversely oval, expanded laterally and sometimes posteriorly, embossed, and a little elevated on its periphery. Front little produced. Eyes very small, lodged in circular orbits. Basal article of the antennules broad and almost quadrilateral in form. Basal article of the antennae elongated and joined to the front by its internal angle; flagellum small and lodged in the orbital hiatus. Epistome short. Buccal cavity a little narrowing anteriorly. Third maxillipeds not strongly elongated; merus truncate anteriorly and outside, with an emargination for insertion of the palpus. Chelipeds and ambulatory legs entirely concealed under the margin of the carapace, compressed and having cristiform ridges. (Guinot 1998)
