Hooked hairs almost always wanting. Carapace usually triangular or pentagonal. Eyes usually retractile within small, circular and well-defined orbits. Floor of orbit nearly continued to the front, leaving a hiatus usually filled by the second article of the antennary peduncle. Antennules folding a little obliquely. Antennae small, deeply imbedded between the inner angle of the orbit and the antennulary fossae; basal article short, not fused with epistome nor with front. Palp of third maxilliped articulated at antero-internal angle of merus. Chelipeds not specially mobile, usually much longer and heavier than the other legs. Male and female abdomens with all segments distinct. Female openings sternal. Male openings coxal. (Guinot 1998)
