Genus Macrophthalmus

Latreille, 1829

Carapace depressed, rectangular or trapezoid, breadth always exceeding length; front narrow, depressed; lateral margins parallel or posteriorly convergent, number of antero-lateral teeth variable, may range from 1-4. Third maxillipeds with subrectangular merus smaller than or subequal to ischium, breadth of former exceeding length; length on ischium exceeding breadth. Chelipeds homochelous or nearly so; merus triangular in cross section; palm large and elongate; dactylus and immovable finger never obscured by hairs, spoon-tipped, differentiated tooth present on dactylus and frequently also on immovable finger of males; in females the chelae are much smaller and bear no teeth on cutting edges. Third and fourth pair of pereiopods clearly larger than remaining ones, fifth smallest; meri long, triangular in cross section, upper margins with distal subterminal spine, which may be concealed in hair.
