Carapace generally broad and quadrilateral, but sometimes rounded. Antero-lateral margins generally armed with teeth behind the exorbital angle, rarely entire. Front rather narrow, bilobed. Orbits and eyestalks with the tendency to be very long; cornea generally well developed but small, sometimes reduced. Thoracic sternum very broadened. First segments of male abdomen not covering the whole length between the last pairs of legs. Male openings coxal but penis often lying in a more or less elongate sternal canal. G1 of the panopeid type, with several apical lobes. G2 short, curved. (Guinot 1998)
