Genus Podophthalmus

Lamarck, 1801

Carapace from 1.65 to more than 2 times as broad as long, broadest at the level of first antero-lateral teeth; front narrow, spatulate; lateral borders strongly convergent, antero-lateral borders with 2 teeth. Merus of third maxilliped with rounded antero-lateral corners. Chelipeds with elongate pincers; merus with prominent spines; carpus with well developed internal spine. Dactylus and propodus of 5th pereiopod paddle-shaped, natatorial. (Türkay 1995)

Eyestalks enormously long, orbits very wide occupying entire anterior border of carapace except for very narrow front; 2 antero-lateral teeth. (Davie 1999)

Type species: Podophthalmus spinosus Lamarck, 1801, by monotypy.
