Carapace bulging, broadest well in front of midline, dorsal surface only sparsely hairy, with a number of spines and spinules; pseudorostral spines small and directed obliquely forwards; rostrum more or less bifid at tip. Eyes not inflated. With pigmented patches (? photophores) on palm of cheliped near base of dactylus. Dactylus of fifth pereiopod prehensile against distoventral corner of propodus, which is either produced or carries stiff spines. (Türkay 1995)

Type species: Hypsophrys superciliosa Wood-Mason & Alcock, 1891, by monotypy.
Gender feminine.
