Genus Charybdis

Carapace hexagonal, moderately broad, with transverse, granular ridges at least in its anterior half; front with 6 lobes or teeth of very different shape; antero-lateral borders with 6-8 (usually 6) teeth including outer orbital angles. Chelipeds longer than any of the ambulatory legs, usually a little heterochelous; merus with spines on its anterior border; carpus with a strong inner spine; palm with spines on its upper face; fingers strongly toothed. Second to fourth pairs of pereiopods compressed; fifth pereiopod natatorial, propodus and dactylus compressed and forming a swimming paddle. (Türkay 1995)

6-7 antero-lateral teeth, subequal or second antero-lateral tooth much smaller than remainder; chelae of normal length; arm shorter than breadth of carapace. (Davie 1999)

Type species: Cancer feriatus Linnaeus, 1758, designated by Glaessner, 1929.
