Arcania erinacea

(Fabricius, 1787)

Carapace globular, thickly covered with thorns and spine-like granules. Front with 2 prominent sharp teeth. Orbit small, eyestalk short. Around the margins of the carapace, there are 11 large acute spines, covered with spinules, similar in position to Arcania undecimspinosa. Third maxillipeds granulated. Sternum sparsely granulated.
Chelipeds subcylindrical. Merus covered with spinulated granules, which on the dorsal surface are sharper than on the ventral. Dorsal surface and outer surface of carpus and palm finely granulated, their ventral surface smooth. Fingers slender, shorter than palm, their inner border finely toothed. Ambulatory legs with a row of short spines on anterior and posterior borders, dorsal surface granulated, ventral surface smooth, the anterior margin and the dorsal surface with distinct granules. Anterior margins of dactylus with a row of short hairs.
First pleopod of the male slender, tapering, chitinous. Abdomen elongate, sparsely covered with granules, third to fifth segments fused. Telson acutely triangular. Carapace length 27.7 mm, breadth 30.6 mm (including lateral and posterior spines).
Habitat: muddy-sandy bottoms. (Dai & Yang, 1991)

Type locality: Indian Ocean.
Range: Oman (Galil, 2001a); Pakistan (Tirmizi & Kazmi, 1991); east coast of India (Alcock, 1896); Sri Lanka; Japan - Sagami Bay (Balss, 1922b), Tosa Bay (Sakai, 1976a); China - Xiamen, Tsimei, and Liuwutien, Fujian Province (Shen, 1940b); South China Sea (Dai & Yang, 1991); Thailand (Galil, 2001a); Singapore (Galil, 2001a).
