Carapace subglobose or quadrilateral. Antero-lateral margins marked with tooth or only indentation behind the exorbital angle. Front variable but never very broad. Interantennular septum broad. Antennules folding lengthwise and parallel. Eyestalks usually elongate. Buccal cavern very large. Third maxillipeds broad, completely closing the buccal cavern. Chelipeds symmetrical or slightly asymmetrical in both sexes; palm and fingers slender and gradually tapering or rather stout and not very short. Ambulatory legs: between the bases of P2 and P3 generally presence of a hairy-ridged pouch; merus usually bearing a tympanum. (Guinot 1998)
