Genus Heteroplax

Stimpson, 1858

Carapace broader than long, transverse, broadest between the external orbital angles, which are very stout. Dorsal surface smooth, with the regions indistinct. Antero-lateral margins slightly arched, very short, with 2-3 teeth behind the exorbital angle. Front broad, square-cut but marked with a more or less distinct median notch in the middle line. Eyestalks rather long. Antennules folded transversely. Antennae: basal article short and subcylindrical; flagellum of standing loosely in the inner orbital hiatus, which is left open. Buccal cavern square, completely closed by the third maxillipeds. Palp of third maxillipeds articulating with the inner angle of the merus. Chelipeds subequal, short and smooth. Ambulatory legs rather slender and elongate, unarmed. Male abdomen with all segments distinct. (Guinot 1998)
