Carapace more or less xanthoid in outline, dorsally convex. Surface with regions generally well defined. Antero-lateral margins generally well separated from the postero-lateral ones and usually cut into lobes or teeth, the last often continued on the branchial region by a transverse crest. Antennules folded longitudinally or transversely. Buccal cavern oval/narrow or quadrangular. Third maxillipeds sometimes highly modified, elongated and pediform or broad. Chelipeds subequal and similar, sometimes unequal; fingers thin and acute, usually crossing at their extremities. Male abdomen with segments 3 to 5 fused. (Guinot 1998)
