Portunidae with eyestalks of normal length; carapace broad (transversely elliptical) and convex in both directions; antennal flagellum lies in orbital hiatus. (Davie 1999)

Carapace very wide, transversely oval, subelliptical or indistinctly subhexagonal; supraorbital fissures may be absent, infraorbital margin variously modified; front much narrower than posterior border; antero-lateral border convex, toothed or entire. Basal antennal segment narrow, long, lying obliquely, not lobulate, antennal peduncle entering orbital hiatus; lobe on first maxilliped (“portunid lobe”) usually present. Chelipeds longer than ambulatory legs, spines on cheliped segments reduced in number or absent. Dactyli of last pair of legs styliform or lanceolate. (Apel & Spiridonov, 1998)
