Carapace transversely oval or hexagonal. Dorsal surface and other parts of the body characteristically covered with asteroidal, mushroom ornaments, sometimes surelevated, disposed symmetrically; regions well delimited and subdivided, sometimes separated by large characteristic grooves. Antero-lateral margins either arched, regularly crenate and tuberculate but appearing continuous, or cut in several spines, with the epibranchial one very developed. Rostrum more or less deflexed, either bilobed and rounded, or tridentate. Antennules folding obliquely. Basal article of antennae very short, not reaching the inner canthus of orbit. Chelipeds very unequal; finger tip either spoon-shaped or acute; surface with spiniform lobules or spines. Ambulatory legs covered with setae; merus crest-like, serrated or spinose; other articles with spines. Male abdomen with all segments distinct. Female openings sternal. Male openings coxal. G2 long, with a long and whip-like flagellum. (Guinot 1998)
