Subfamilia Leucosiinae

Carapace not very broad and without lateral expansions. Dorsal surface smooth. Frontal region narrowed and produced anteriorly. Eyes very minute. Anterior part of pterygostomial region ending in the circular depression behind the orbit; presence of a thoracic sinus, i.e., a shallow pit in front and above the bases of the chelipeds. Third maxillipeds with the merus shorter than half the length of ischium measured along the inner border. Chelipeds: hands always much broader at the base, either short and subglobular, or tapering-subcylindrical, with a swollen base; fingers slender, of subequal width throughout; dactylus moving often in a vertical plane, sometimes in an horizontal plane. Male abdomen with several segments fused. Female abdomen enlarged, discoid. (Guinot 1998)
