Familia Homolidae

de Haan, 1839

Body of a size varying from small to very large. Carapace elongated or quadrangular, rarely narrowing anteriorly, with deep vertical sides. On the dorsal surface of the carapace always a linea homolica and, generally, at least two distinct horizontal grooves, cervical and branchio-cardiac. Often a "human face". Epistome normally developed. A pair of pseudorostral teeth or spines, varying from short to long. Orbit absent or weakly defined; exceptionally an orbital plate; generally eyes not completely sheltered by the orbits. Third maxilliped pediform, subpediform, more rarely operculiform. Male abdomen covering the whole thoracic sternum, sometimes partly the coxae of the legs. Female abdomen with all segments distinct, or sometimes with segments 5 and 6 fused. P5 reduced in size, dorsal and always with a special terminal apparatus, varying from simple (subcheliform) to complex, sometimes with a distinct chela. Carrying behaviour. (Guinot 1998)
