Genus Varuna

H. Milne Edwards, 1830

Carapace very little broader than long. Dorsal surface depressed; regions fairly well indicated. Lateral margins thin and sharp. Antero-lateral margins arched, cut into three teeth including the exorbital angle. Front a little more than half the greatest breadth of the carapace, straight, prominent, sublaminar. Orbits with their lower border broken and incomplete. Third maxillipeds gaping, but not very widely; exopodite not nearly as broad as the ischium; palp articulating near the middle of the anterior border of the merus. Chelipeds equal but variable in size. Ambulatory legs with the three terminal articles compressed, dilated and plumed, generally for swimming, natatory. Male abdomen rarely covering the whole space between the last pair of legs. (Guinot 1998)
