Genus Pinnixa

White, 1846

Carapace much wider than long, its tegument usually firm. Surface dorsally flattened posteriorly; anterior third deflexed; the regions faintly indicated. Antero-lateral angles rounded. Front narrow, nearly transverse, with a median groove. Orbits broadly ovate or nearly circular, with a a wide inner hiatus which is partly occupied by the basal antennal article. Eyestalks very short. Antennules fold transversely or obliquely in wide fossae which communicate with each other beneath the front. Epistome linear, transverse. Third maxillipeds: ischium small; merus large; palp jointed to summit of merus; dactylus articulated on inner side of the preceeding one near base. Chelipeds of moderate length; hand large, compressed. Ambulatory legs of unequal length. Abdomen usually with all segments distinct and narrower at the base than the sternum breadth. (Guinot 1998)
