Carapace transversely oval, sometimes pentagonal or rounded. Dorsal surface: regions always well demarcated, covered with lobules or tubercles, which are sometimes squamiform, or with granules. Antero-lateral margins sometimes rounded, or cut into four lobes, either rounded or toothed. Front broad, not extending beyond the supraorbital angles, sometimes more produced. Male chelipeds subequal or feebly unequal. Chelipeds tuberculated or granulated; fingers not spoon-shaped. Ambulatory legs almost smooth, or granulated or tuberculated, sometimes with depressed or squamose tubercles; sometimes anterior border markedly crested. Toxic crabs. (Guinot 1998)
