Carapace of subcircular or transversely elliptical shape, surface smooth or granular; front with lobes or teeth; antero-lateral borders either smooth or with teeth or lobes (usually 4-5, same in Japanese species). Flagellum of antenna excluded from orbit. Chelipeds usually with carinae at least on palm. Dactylus of fifth pereiopod claw-shaped, thus limb not natatorial. (Türkay 1995)

Front not markedly produced; front, upper border of orbit, and antero-lateral border not lamellate; fifth legs may be turned back dorsally over carapace, carpus not broader than propodus; dactylus claw-shaped. (Davie 1999)
