Genus Libystes

A. Milne Edwards, 1867

Carapace broader than long, surface smooth, microscopically punctate; front divided into 2 subtruncate lobes, sometimes faintly so; antero-lateral borders entire or with 6-7 teeth. Basal antennal joint narrow, flagellum not excluded from orbit. Antero-external angle of third maxilliped strongly produced. Chelipeds slender, palm swollen and glabrous, fingers elongate. Pereiopods 2-4 slender. Propodus and dactylus of fifth pereiopod not flattened, gressorial or flattened and natatorial. Segments III-V of male abdomen fused. (Türkay 1995)

Portunidae with eyestalks of normal length; carapace broad (transversely elliptical) and convex in both directions; antennal flagellum lies in orbital hiatus; antero-lateral border of carapace entire or bearing at most 6 teeth; merus of third maxilliped not produced at antero-external angle. (Davie 1999)
