Genus Hemigrapsus

Carapace distinctly broader than long or as broad as long. Antero-lateral margins parallel or arched, cut into three teeth. Front about half the breadth of carapace, truncate. Third maxillipeds leaving a rhomboidal gap between them and not completely closing the buccal cavern; merus shorter than ischium, as long as broad and with the antero-external angle not expanded; palp articulating in the middle portion of the anterior border of the merus; exopodite narrower than the ischium. Chelipeds either with a patch of hairs in both outer and inner surfaces near the bases of fingers, or with a patch of hairs only on outer surface, or with a fleshy protuberance at the base of dactylus. Ambulatory legs with the dactyli stout and compressed or slender and curved. (Guinot 1998)
