Carapace relatively narrow (CB/CL = 1.2-1.35), smooth; front with 3 or 4 spines or teeth; 5 equally spaced antero-lateral teeth. Chelipeds subequal in most cases; merus without posterior teeth; carpus with well developed internal spine; palm with 3 carinae on upper surface. Swimming leg with anterior border of carpus either sharp or carinate; propodus enlarged and flattened; dactyl broadly oval. (Türkay 1995)
Portunidae with eyestalks of normal length; carapace broad, not convex in both directions, without tubercles (except Ovalipes georgei ); 5 or 6 antero-lateral teeth; basal joint of second antenna broad; chelipeds and legs both long, one pair of legs as long as chelipeds; carapace relatively narrow; last legs typical swimming paddles, dactyl oval; striae for stridulation present (except Ovalipes georgei ).
