Carapace subcircular. Front (in Japanese species) quadridentate. Eyestalks retractile, longitudinally oriented. Exopod of third maxilliped without flagellum. Propodus and dactylus of the 2nd and 3rd pereiopod without any distinct rows of setae. Male abdomen with 5, female with 6 segments. Female lacking 1st pleopod. (Türkay 1995)
Type species: Tymolus japonicus Stimpson, 1858, by monotypy.
