Carapace xanthoid-shaped or transversely oval, very broadened and dorsally flattened, with areolation sometimes feeble. Antero-lateral margins with four lobes, teeth, spines or spinules, rarely entire. Crests of endostome defining efferent channels well developed and generally complete. Larger chela usually with prominent, crushing molariform tooth. Thoracic sternum narrow or not very widened. All male abdominal segments distinct, movable. Female openings sternal. Male openings coxal. G1 stout, relatively straight to feebly curved. G2 generally longer than G1. Stone and mud crabs. (Guinot 1998)
