Land crabs. Carapace transversaly oval. Dorsal surface swollen, usually smooth. Antero-lateral margins strongly arched, unarmed or with only one tooth. Fronto-orbital border very much less than the greatest breadth of the carapace. Front of moderate breadth, always strongly deflexed. Antennular fossae narrow. A rhomboidal gap between the third maxilliped. Exopodite of third maxilliped slender and inconspicuous, sometimes more or less concealed, and sometimes without a flagellum. Palp of third maxilliped articulating either at the antero-external angle or at the middle of the anterior border of merus, and sometimes more or less hidden behind the merus. Male abdomen usually with all segments distinct. Female openings sternal. Male openings sternal. (Guinot 1998)
