Subfamilia Heteropanopeinae

Alcock, 1898

The abdomen of the male is divided into 6 (segments 5 and 6 fused together) or 7 segments. In males, the length of the second pleopod never exceeds that of the first; usually the second pleopod is very short but can sometimes extend beyond half of the length of the first. The abdomen is elongated and narrow, covering most of sternite 4 and with a locking mechanism; the genital openings are coxal or coxo-sternal. The front is normal; the xanthoid carapace is not much broader than long and is dorsally convex, sometimes globular or is transversely oval, much broader than long and dorsally flattened. The carapace is xanthoid, narrow, dorsally convex with a narrow posterior margin. The carapace is smooth or very feebly granular on a small part of the surface and with more or less small tufts of setae in certain areas; the regions are not at all or only feebly indicated; the antero-lateral margins have three feeble teeth or lobes that are never spinose. The chelipeds are dissimilar, smooth or very feebly granular. (Serène, 1984)
