Carapace broader than long, no translucent or iridescent patches on surface; 5 antero-lateral teeth; front with 3 lobes or teeth, or entire. Basal antennal article touching front. Chelipeds unequal; merus without ventrodistal tooth; carpus with strong tooth at inner corner. Propodus of second to fourth pereiopods each with one ventral ridge. Third to fifth abdominal segments fused in male. (Türkay 1995)
Portunidae with eyestalks of normal length; carapace broader than long with 5 antero-lateral teeth, and with numerous transverse ridges; chelipeds unequal, generally shorter than legs, merus without distal ventral tooth, carpus with strong inner tooth but generally lacking outer tooth; legs relatively short; dactyl of fifth leg lanceolate; basal joint of second antenna broad, touching front.
