Subfamilia Caphyrinae

Carapace relatively narrow. Dorsal surface either smooth or traversed on either side by ridges. Antero-lateral margins cut into four or five teeth. Basal article of antennae with its antero-external angle lobulate; flagellum excluded from the orbit. Chelipeds and legs short, but chelipeds distinctly, or only slightly, longer than the legs. Ambulatory legs short; P5 either being swimming-paddle or ending in a prehensile dactylus, claw-shaped. (Guinot 1998)
