Carapace about as broad as or broader than long. Dorsal surface with branchial regions not expanded. Orbits complete, closed, not in open communication with antennulary fossae; their upper edge deeply emarginate so that the retracted eyes are hardly concealed. Basal antennal article immovably fused with suborbital lobe; flagellum usually very minute or obsolete. Chelipeds very short and stout; fingers movable in slant plane. Ambulatory legs exposed, stout.
