Subfamilia Ethusinae

Guinot, 1977

Relatively small size. Carapace oval or cordiform. Front usually cut into four teeth. Anterior extremity of buccal cavern not reaching as far as the level of the basal joint of the antennules. Afferent branchial orifices wide and placed immediately against bases of chelipeds; carapace's pterygostomial region not joining with the sternum. Eyestalks preserving good power of movement or practically immobile. P4 and P5 reduced and subdorsal, with the dactylus bent along the propodus which does not bring a proximal expansion. Abdominal segments 3-5 fused in males. Thoracic sternum relatively widened, with all the sutures interrupted and the sternite 8 expanded. Male genital orifice coxo-sternal, i.e male genital duct reaching the coxa of P5 but with the penis not exposed, lying along the suture 7/8 in a long concealed penial tube and opening, manifestly, in a sternal position. Male first pleopod thick; second pleopod long, sometimes longer than the first. Carrying behaviour known, notably with sponges, shells of bivalves, gastropods, or bits of calcareous algae, sponges, and sea anemones. (Guinot 1998)
