Podophthalmus vigil

(Weber, 1795)

Carapace about 2.5 times as broad as long, surface uneven, regions not very well defined, a rather deep groove extends from the median region to the base of the second antero-lateral tooth; front entire, deflexed; second antero-lateral tooth much smaller than first. Eyestalk without pterygoid expansions. Chelipeds asymmetrical, right slightly heavier than left; merus with 3 spines on anterior and 2 on posterior border; carpus with exterior tooth; distal portion of inner surface of palm bearing a spinule. Carapace broad, breadth ca. 2.5 times length, front entire, deflexed; eyestalks without wing-like expansions distal portion of inner surface of palm of cheliped bearing a spinule. (Davie 1999)

Type locality: "Oceano Indico", mainly collected in Tranquebar, south-east India (Fransen et al., 1997: 225).
