Genus Cardisoma

Latreille, 1828

Carapace smooth, antero-lateral crest very weak in adult individuals, distinct in juveniles; fronto-orbital width more than half the maximum breadth of carapace; front straight to convex; suborbital crest absent. Interantennular septum broad; epistome well defined and prominent. Pterygostomial regions covered by a velvet of hairs which is much higher than broad. Exopodite of third maxilliped with flagellum. Chelipeds largely heterochelous in adults, merus clearly shorter than palm. Carpus and propodus of second to fifth pereiopods with rows of hairs, dactyli with spine rows. (Türkay 1995)
