Genus Callinectes

Stimpson, 1860

Carapace much broader than long, its surface distinctly divided into regions; front with 2 or 4 teeth; antero-lateral borders with 9 teeth, last ones large spines, much longer than any other antero-lateral tooth. Chelipeds equal to subequal, longer than any of the ambulatory legs; merus with distinct spines on anterior border; carpus without spine on inner corner; palm prismatic and costate. Propodus and dactylus of fifth pereiopods distinctly flattened, natatorial. Abdomen of male distinctly T-shaped. (Türkay 1995)

Carapace broader than long; 9 antero-lateral teeth, not alternately large and small; basal antennal joint broad with distal lobule; wrist of cheliped without inner spine or tubercle. Single Indo-West Pacific species. (Davie 1999)

Type species: Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896, by designation under the plenary powers of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, Opinion 712.
