Carapace broad, flattened or even concave, and with lamelliform lateral expansions concealing the ambulatory legs or part of them. Orbits small and deep. Antennae obsolete or nearly so. Apex of third maxillipeds sharply triangular, projecting much beyond the extremity of the exopodite; exopodite generally dilated, its outer margin more or less arcuated. Chelipeds symmetrical, large and depressed, always exposed. Male abdomen with many segments fused together. (Guinot 1998)
