The abdomen of the male is divided into 6 (segments 5 and 6 fused together) or 7 segments. In males, the length of the second pleopod never exceeds that of the first; usually the second pleopod is very short but can sometimes extend beyond half of the length of the first. The abdomen is elongated and narrow, covering most of sternite 4 and with a locking mechanism; the genital openings are coxal or coxo-sternal. The front is normal; the xanthoid carapace is not much broader than long and is dorsally convex, sometimes globular or is transversely oval, much broader than long and dorsally flattened. The carapace is enlarged transversely and dorsally flattened with an enlarged posterior margin. The second pleopod is sigmoid, very short, typically pilumnoid. The first pleopod has the extremity usually turned back on itself and with a tapering point. (Serène, 1984)
