Carapace regions well defined, with smooth surfaces. Antero-lateral margins with their two posterior teeth stronger and more acute than the two anterior ones. Front not extending beyond the supraorbital angles, smooth. Male chelipeds very unequal and dissimilar; on the larger cheliped outer surface of the palm with smooth, globular tubercles; on the small cheliped outer surface with acute tubercles or spines. Type species: Xanthodes notatus Dana, 1852, by original designation.
