Carapace squarish to hexagonal; font with teeth or lobes; antero-lateral and postero-lateral margins of carapace with relatively dense setae, but not forming distinct fringe. Orbit complete. Fossae for antennulae broader than long, antennulae fold transversely or obliquely. Antennae short, much shorter than carapace length, not strongly setose. Third maxilliped merus quadrate to ovoid, never distinctly triangular in shape. P5 subequal to P2-4, or if smaller, not greatly reduced in size compared to P2. Vulvae of adult female sternal, exposed, not covered by abdomen (after Ng, 1998).
