Halicarcinus messor

(Stimpson, 1858)

Carapace suboval, about as broad as long; lateral walls of carapace with two teeth, one at antero-lateral angle, the second at posterior lateral angle; rostrum obscurely trilobate, lateral lobes very small and acute, median one long and spatuliform, broadest halfway along its length and broadly rounded apically, no obvious setation, concavities between rostral lobes clear, but short, hardly reaching marginal rim. Chelipeds much heavier and slightly longer than ambulatory legs, palm swollen; second to fifth pereiopods stout; meri with a strong terminal tooth on dorsal margin; dactyli curved. Male abdomen without fused segments. (Türkay 1995)

Range: Japan - Shimoda (Stimpson, 1858b, 1907, Sakai, 1935), Mutsu Bay (Yokoya, 1928), Tateyama Bay and Shimoda (Sakai, 1938a), Sagami Bay (Sakai, 1965b), Sagami Bay, Shimoda, and Fukui Prefecture (Sakai, 1976a), Amakusa (Yamaguchi et al., 1976), Yamagata Prefecture (Suzuki S., 1979), Taichi, Wakayama Prefecture (Miyake, 1983), Tokyo Bay; Korea - Cheonbu, Hae-undae, Bangjugpo, Impo, Seongsanpo, Yeosu, and Eocheong Island (Kim, 1973), Cheju-do (Kim & Chang, 1985); China - Zhejiang and north of Fujian (Dai & Yang, 1991); intertidal zone.
