Podotreme disposition. Body with largely exposed pleurae by reduction of branchiostegite (=Gymnopleura Bourne, 1916). A special respiratory apparatus. Elongate thoracic nerve ganglionic mass. Male and female abdomen consisting of six segments plus the telson. First abdominal segments in the prolongation of the carapace. Male abdomen short, incompletely flexed against the ventral plastron. In both sexes no uropods. Spermathecal apertures very close, but paired. Legs modified for burrowing. P4 similar to preceeding legs. P5 often reduced (not reduced in few raninids such as genus Ranina Lamarck) and dorsal, but never with a cheliform apparatus. Thoracic sternum usually narrow posteriorly to sternite 4. (Guinot 1998)
