Callinectes sapidus

Carapace, including lateral spines, 2.5 times as wide as long; bearing transverse gastric ridges made of granules; epibranchial ridges starting at lateral spines broadly interrupted across branchial regions; 2 frontal teeth, submedians rudimentary; antero-lateral borders with 9 teeth of which 8 are subequal, the ninth forming a strong, laterally directed spine. Merus of chelipeds with 3 strong spines on anterior border, one small distal one on posterior border; carpus with one spine and one spiniform tubercle on posterior face, inner face without spines; palm with one proximal spine; fingers strongly dentate. Male abdomen clearly T-shaped, penultimate segment constricted in proximal half. (Türkay 1995)

Range: Florida (Muraoka, 1998); France - Rochefort (Bouvier, 1900), Gironde (Amanieu & Le Dantec, 1960); Netherlands - Amsterdam (Hartog & Holthuis, 1932, 1934, 1951), IJmuiden (Holthuis, 1968); Denmark (T. Wolff, 1954); Mediterranean (Holthuis & Gottlieb, 1940, 1955); Japan - Hamana Lake (Sakai, 1976b, probably brought by the steamer in the ballast water tanks from America to Europa).
