Trachycarcinus balssi

Surface of carapace with scattered short hairs, moderately areolated, each areola armed with spinules, partly with studded tubercles; lateral borders armed with broad teeth with spinulated edges; rostral spines slender, their tips bi- or trifid, middle spine overreaching lateral ones. Chelipeds more robust, but not very much longer than subsequent ambulatory legs, in male not very strongly heterochelous, upper faces of palm and carpus spinulate. Second to fifth pereiopods smooth, no obvious spinulation. (Türkay 1995)

Type locality: Cape Rollin, Simushir Island, Kuril'skiye Ostrova.
Range: Simushir Island (Rathbun, 1932); Japan - Suruga Bay, Omae-zaki, Ashizuri-misaki, Sata-misaki, Koshiki-jima, Goto-retto, Tsushima, north of Nagato, Wakasa Bay, Noto, Toyama Bay, Sado-gashima and Jusan-gata (Yokoya, 1933), Hatsushima and Manazuru (Sakai, 1935), Manazuru and between Ito and Hatsushima (Sakai, 1939), Sagami Bay (Sakai, 1965b), Tosa Bay (Guinot & Sakai, 1970), near Tsushima (Takeda, 1973c), entire coasts around Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, on Pacific side as well as continental side (Sakai, 1976a), Yamagata Prefecture (Suzuki S., 1979), Tosa Bay (Guinot, 1989b), Suruga Bay (Takeda, 1997); Korea - north-east of Cheju-do (Yokoya, 1933), Yeosu (Kamita, 1941), Cheju (Kim & Chang, 1985); 82-376 m.
