Thacanophrys brevispinosus

(Yokoya, 1933)

Carapace granular especially on posterior half; rostral horns straight, stongly divergent, angle between two more than 60 °. Preorbital hood divided into two lobes, the anterior one distally pointed and directed outwards and a little forwards; the posterior lobe distally rounded. The supraorbital lobe triangular and distally pointed. The postorbital tooth large, pointed and dorsally flattened. The succeeding two lobes terminally rounded; the anterior broad, the distal margin provided with a rather deep notch. Two pointed teeth follow the above lobe on the margin. One more pointed tooth on the branchial region, but on the right side no one is found in the specimen from Station 211. Gastric, cardiac and intestinal regions elevated, and each provided with a pointed but rather short tooth; tooth on cardiac region with paired tips. Posterior margin rounded and with no tooth provided.
Chelipeds subequal; merus three carinated, each carina provided with flattened teeth; carpus also carinated on the outer margin. Chela smoothly surfaced, palm longer than finger.
Abdomen of female broad, consists of seven segments, broadest at antepenultimate segment.
The species near Chlorinoides goldsboroughi Rathbun, differs from this in present of only one gastric tooth and the postocular tooth is antero-laterally pointed. (Yokoya, 1933)

Type locality: near Tanabe, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan.
Range: Japan - near Tanabe (Yokoya, 1933), Sagami Bay (Sakai, 1965b), Sagami Bay, Kii Peninsula, Tosa Bay and east of Tanegashima (Sakai, 1976a), Ashizuri-misaki (Muraoka, 1998).
